Chillout music is actually an umbrella term that loosely encompasses several electronic subgenres, unified by their mellow sound and mid-tempo rhythms. The word itself is a slang version of relax.

The term chill-out room was first used around 1989 in reference to the White Room at London’s Heaven nightclub, where ambient mixes were played to give partygoers a break from the more intense main room. The playlists featured tracks by Brian Eno, Pink Floyd, the Eagles, and Mike Oldfield. The first DJs were Jimmy Cauty and Alex Paterson, who later co-founded The Orb. Around the same time, British acid house group The KLF released an album titled Chill Out in 1990.

By the mid-1990s, chill-out rooms had become standard in larger clubs, where a growing range of downtempo sounds were being experimented with. Ambient house, New Age, trip-hop, nu jazz, and psychill all found their place. These rooms often featured comfy, cushioned sofas and psychedelic lighting displays that added to the laid-back vibe. Over time, older genres like lounge music were absorbed under the chillout umbrella, along with newer forms such as smooth electronica and soft techno.

The first events dedicated entirely to chillout music — Oscillate party nights — were organized in Birmingham by the Higher Intelligence Agency in the mid-90s. The concept soon took off in the United States, where it was fondly nicknamed exotic electronica. Meanwhile, Balearic beat — already prominent in Ibiza since the early 80s —began to overlap in meaning with chillout as it blended with house music. Sounds from other cultures, including Indian, Middle Eastern, and Spanish flamenco traditions, also found their way into the boundless world of chillout.

As chillout music absorbed more and more electronic styles, it became a globally recognized name in club culture. London-based Ministry of Sound played a key role in popularizing the genre, helping to establish Ibiza as a chillout capital. In 2008, they released a compilation called Chilled, featuring the most iconic chillout tracks from 1991 to 2008. Since then, the list of world-famous music producers and beach clubs (like Café del Mar) committed to the chillout style has only grown.

Chillout music draws on the oldest musical instincts, evokes a retro vibe from the recent past, and channels the mood of the space age, the digital world, and technologies of the distant future. It's endlessly familiar and yet remains unknowable. Even today, it still holds countless surprises.
